Zubeen Garg death case: SIT to submit chargesheet on December 12
Guwahati: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg will file its chargesheet on December 12, marking a major step forward in one of Assam’s most closely followed investigations. SIT chief and Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed that the probe has reached its final stage.
Officials said the SIT has examined over 300 witnesses since the investigation began after Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19. Once the chargesheet is submitted, the entire case record will become public. Authorities declined to reveal details of the findings, citing legal restrictions.
Officials also clarified that the financial fraud allegations involving festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta are part of a separate case unrelated to the death probe.
Investigators are working round the clock to meet the December 18 court deadline. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the SIT has compiled nearly 3,500 pages of evidence and witness statements. He stressed that the chargesheet must be filed on time, as any delay could allow the accused to seek bail.
The Chief Minister held a high-level meeting with the Advocate General to finalize legal procedures. He directed the SIT to submit the chargesheet between December 6 and 12.
The SIT is treating Zubeen Garg’s death as a murder case, not an accidental drowning. Investigators are examining whether criminal conspiracy, negligence, or both contributed to the 52-year-old singer’s death during his visit to Singapore for the North East India Festival. The incident shocked Assam and triggered over 60 FIRs across the state.
The chargesheet will list detailed allegations against seven arrested individuals, who are currently in judicial custody. They are:
- Shyamkanu Mahanta, festival organizer
- Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen Garg’s manager
- Sandipan Garg, cousin and Assam Police DSP
- Shekharjyoti Goswami, drummer
- Amrit Prabha Mahanta, co-singer
- Paresh Baishya, personal security officer
- Nandeswar Borah, personal security officer
