Zubeen Garg death case: Assam SIT files 3,500-page chargesheet
Guwahati: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) handling the Zubeen Garg case has filed a comprehensive charge sheet in the Kamrup Metropolitan Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, providing extensive details on the high-profile investigation into the singer’s death.
The charge sheet, running nearly 3,500 pages, covers case numbers 18 and 25 and outlines the legal provisions applied under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, India’s updated criminal code that revises and replaces several sections of the previous Indian Penal Code.
The document states that authorities charged Siddharth Sharma, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Amritprabha Mahanta, and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami under Section 103 of the BNS, which addresses abetment of murder, suggesting they allegedly facilitated or encouraged the act.
Authorities also booked Sandeepan Garg under Section 105 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, accusing him of causing death with knowledge or intent but without the full premeditation required for murder.
The charge sheet also implicates two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, for criminal breach of trust. The CBI has invoked Section 316 of the BNS against them, highlighting their alleged direct involvement in acts that knowingly or intentionally led to fatal consequences.
The SIT submitted the charge sheet along with previously seized evidence, including Zubeen Garg’s mobile phone, medicines, and a suitcase, all of which remain in police custody.
Although authorities have officially filed the charge sheet in court, they say the public may not access its contents immediately. Legal experts, including Munnaprasad Gupta, will comment once the court proceedings begin.
Due to weekend court holidays, authenticated copies for public or media review may only be available from Monday. The filing marks a major milestone in the investigation, clearly detailing the alleged roles of each accused and moving the case closer to judicial scrutiny under the legal framework of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
