Guwahati: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) G.P. Singh on Saturday warned of a potential attack by the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) ahead of Independence Day.

The outlawed militant group is believed to be planning an operation in the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border area.

Singh, who has been overseeing security measures in the ULFA-I stronghold of Upper Assam for the past four days, said intelligence reports indicate the group's intentions.

"We have credible information that a ULFA-I unit is active along the state border and plotting to disrupt Independence Day celebrations," DGP Singh told reporters.

However, the DGP assured the public that security forces are fully prepared to thwart any such attempt.

"The state police, army, and paramilitary forces are on high alert. Both state and central governments are working closely to strengthen security measures in vulnerable areas," he added.

The warning comes nearly two decades after a devastating bomb blast during an Independence Day parade in Dhemaji, Assam, in 2004.

The explosion, triggered by a remote-controlled device, killed 18 people and injured many others.
