Two Assam government officials arrested for corruption
GUWAHATI: In their ongoing efforts to combat corruption, officers from the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption (DVAC) apprehended two Assam government officials, including a child development project officer (CDPO), in separate operations conducted in Chirang and Nagaon districts of Assam on Monday (March 18).
Brajendra Nath Das, serving as the CDPO of Borobazar ICDS project in Bijni, Chirang district of Assam was arrested following allegations of soliciting a bribe.
Das allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 from a contractor for bill payment.
Upon refusal to comply, the contractor reported the matter to the DVAC.
In a meticulously planned operation near the office of the sub-divisional officer (SDO) civil in Bijni, Das was caught red-handed accepting Rs 10,000 as part of the bribe.
The recovered bribe money was seized, and Das was taken into custody.
A case has been registered under section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
In a separate incident, Nanda Hazarika, a switchboard operator at Assam power distribution company limited (APDCL) in Nagaon, was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3500.
Hazarika demanded Rs 19,000 from an individual for processing a commercial meter application.
However, he later agreed to a reduced bribe amount of Rs 3500.
Acting on the complaint, DVAC officers conducted a trap operation in Nagaon town of Assam, leading to Hazarika's arrest near his residence.
The recovered bribe money was seized, and a case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
