GUWAHATI: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone for the second Ayurvedic college in Assam at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district of the state on Monday (March 04).

Notably, this marks the establishment of the second Ayurvedic college in the Northeast state of Assam after a hiatus of 76 years.

During the event, Sonowal also virtually laid the foundation stones for two 50-bed AYUSH hospitals in Kokrajhar and Baksa in Assam.

Emphasizing Assam's rich heritage of traditional medicine, Sonowal highlighted the neglect it faced over the decades, particularly during the Congress-led administrations.

Sonowal emphasized the need for a robust healthcare system integrating modern and traditional medicine for holistic care. He contrasted the current government's focus on traditional medicine with the alleged neglect under previous Congress governments.

The new Ayurvedic college, estimated to cost Rs 70 crore, will initially admit 100 students for the undergraduate course (BAMS), with provisions for postgraduate courses in the future. Additionally, the campus will feature a herbal garden and a unit for manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines.

Furthermore, the 50-bed integrated AYUSH hospitals in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts of Assam will be established with an investment of Rs 30 crore, contributing to the enhancement of healthcare facilities in the region.
