Pranab Doley, three other Assam land rights activists get bail in Kaziranga luxury hotel project case
Guwahati: Four land rights activists, including Pranab Doley, have been granted bail by a court, the Bhumi Adhikar Joutha Sangram Samity (Joint Struggle Committee for Land Rights) said on Thursday.
The others granted bail are Bijit Kutum, Bhaskar Saikia and Rajeev Pegu.
In a statement, the committee said the court's decision had reinforced its resolve to continue its campaign for land rights in Assam.
The committee thanked senior advocate Shantanu Borthakur, its legal advisor, and advocates Mrityunjay Pegu and Deepesh Agrawal for representing the four activists and securing their release on bail.
It said legal proceedings involving Adit Chandra Rabha, advisor to the Borduar Bagan Bhumi Pattan Dabi Samity (Borduar Garden Land Settlement Demand Committee), are still ongoing.
The committee also thanked people across Assam who, it said, had supported the campaign and raised their voices in favour of land rights and justice while the activists were in custody.
The four activists were arrested earlier this month during protests against a proposed luxury hotel project near the Kaziranga National Park. The project has been opposed by land rights groups, which have alleged irregularities in the transfer of land for the proposed hotel and demanded protection of the rights of local communities.
