SILCHAR: Senior Congress leader and MP Gaurav Gogoi took a direct dig at Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while campaigning for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections.

Gaurav Gogoi trained guns at Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma by stating that although his father was a chief minister for 15 years, the Gogoi family doesn’t own businesses as Sarma’s family.

Reflecting on his late father, former chief minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said: “My father served as the CM of Assam for 15 years, yet our family does not own any tea garden or operate any syndicate under our name.”

“We did not engage in granting sand or coal contracts. He (former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi) was a true statesman,” he added.

It may be mentioned here that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam chief minister, owns several businesses in the state, including tea gardens, an international school, and news and entertainment TV channels, among others.

Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi made this remark while campaigning for party candidate Hafiz Rashid Choudhary in Karimganj.

Addressing a gathering at the election rally, Gaurav Gogoi remarked, “This is not just another election. It could very well be our last election.”

“If the current political landscape remains unchanged, then this could indeed be our final opportunity to participate in the democratic process. Through this election, we are striving to safeguard the principles of our democracy,” Gogoi said.

Gaurav Gogoi also criticised the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), urging voters not to cast their ballots for the party.

He asserted, “We must refrain from supporting political entities that align with the BJP or advocate for Himanta Biswa Sarma. Our valuable votes should not be wasted on such parties.”
