MP Gourav Gogoi urges for museum, music institute, memorials to honour Zubeen Garg’s legacy
Guwahati: After the Assam government decided to perform the last rites of cultural icon Zubeen Garg at Sonapur, following his family’s wishes, Jorhat MP and Assam Pradesh Congress leader Gourav Gogoi on Sunday evening urged the state to take long-term steps to preserve the singer’s legacy.
Gogoi said, “Moy kaliye koisilu... I had already emphasized that Zubeen’s funeral should follow the family’s decision, and that the love and emotions of the people of Jorhat toward the late singer must also be respected.”
Since the government honored the family’s wishes regarding the cremation, the MP presented several appeals to the state.
He urged the government to preserve Zubeen’s ancestral home in Tamulisiga, Jorhat, as a museum that would display his creations and personal memorabilia. He also called for the establishment of a music institute in Jorhat named after Zubeen Garg.
Additionally, Gogoi proposed creating an award in Zubeen’s memory to recognize and encourage emerging musical talents at the state or national level.
He pledged to build a grand public statue of Zubeen Garg in Jorhat after consulting with local residents. He also appealed to the government to install another large statue on the banks of the Brahmaputra, at the Panbazar-Kachari riverfront park in Guwahati, a location Zubeen held close to his heart. Gogoi said such a tribute would honor the singer’s lifelong love for the mighty river.
The Congress leader emphasized that these efforts are crucial to ensure Zubeen Garg’s unmatched cultural contributions continue to inspire future generations.
