Meghalaya: Seven arrested linked to March 9 IED explosion
Shillong: The investigation into the March 9th IED blast in Shillong, Meghalaya has led to the arrest of seven suspects, including a key figure apprehended on Monday.
A joint operation by police teams from Ri-Bhoi and Mairang captured the prime suspect, 21-year-old Namphyrnai Lyngdoh Peinlang, believed to be instrumental in the attack. Peinlang, from Peinlang village, was brought to Shillong from Mairang in Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Authorities are investigating potential connections between the arrested individuals and the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).
The first arrests came two days after the blast, which originated from a garbage container in Them Mawlong. On March 11th, police apprehended Tarson Lymba (58), a leader of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), along with another suspect, Ebakordor Nongpluh (26), from Shillong's Malki area.
The following day, a significant development occurred. Police raided and dismantled an active HNLC sleeper cell, preventing further IED attacks planned for Shillong and Nongpoh. Four HNLC members – Damanbha Ripnar (alias Shall Lapang), Robinis Ripnar, Jill Tariang, and Shining Nongrum – were apprehended in Ri-Bhoi district.
Two days after the sleeper cell's arrest, the HNLC claimed responsibility for the blast and demanded the relocation of 342 families from the Sweepers' Colony within a month.
