Lok Sabha Election Outcome: Northeast sends only 2 women MPs to Delhi

Guwahati: Amidst the culmination of the Lok Sabha elections, the electoral landscape of the Northeast region, which encompasses a total of 25 seats, reveals a notable trend. Among the candidates vying for representation, only two women have clinched victory.

BJP candidate Bijuli Kalita Medhi won from the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, while Kriti Devi Debbarman of the BJP secured a win from the Tripura East constituency.

Bijuli Kalita Medhi won the Guwahati seat by defeating her nearest rival, Mira Borthakur Goswami of Congress, with a margin of 251,090 votes.

Medhi secured 894,887 votes, while Goswami received 643,797 votes. The 45-year-old Medhi, a trader by profession, is a resident of Guwahati and holds an M.A. in Philosophy from Guwahati University.

In Tripura East, BJP’s Kriti Devi Debbarman defeated her nearest rival, Rajendra Reang of CPI (M), by a margin of 486,819 votes, securing 777,447 votes.

Kriti Singh Debbarma, a ‘Maharajkumari’ or princess of the erstwhile Manikya royal family, is the youngest daughter of the late Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya and the sister of TIPRA Motha founder and royal scion-turned-politician Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma.

At least four women candidates from major political parties such as Congress in Assam and NPP in Meghalaya faced defeat.

Congress candidates Mira Borthakur Goswami and Roselina Tirkey were defeated in Assam, while in Meghalaya, Agatha K Sangma and Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh lost to rival candidates from Congress and VPP, respectively.

Roselina Tirkey, representing the Congress, garnered 11,743 votes and lost by 885,300 votes.

Ampareen Lyngdoh of the NPP received 228,678 votes but lost by 155,241 votes.

Agatha K Sangma, another candidate from the NPP, garnered 112,500 votes but was defeated by 163,271 votes.
