Guwahati : Students and resident doctors of Gauhati Medical College (GMCH) in Assam on Wednesday staged protests against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.

The medical professionals of GMCH Assam also took out a candelight march on Tuesday and demanded justice and protection for people working in the healthcare sector across the country.

Doctors had earlier taken to social media to question about safety measures for them in hospitals a day after a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Her brutalized body had been found in a semi-nude state inside a seminar hall on the third floor of the hospital’s emergency building.

The four-page autopsy report revealed that the woman had bleeding from her private parts and there were injury marks on other parts of her body.

“There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, injuries over the face, and a nail. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg, neck, in her right hand, ring finger, and lips,” it stated.

Protests erupted in the hospital after the discovery of the body of the second-year post graduate student with doctors and nurses demanding action on the matter.

Kolkata police arrested one Sanjoy Ray for raping and murdering the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Roy was stationed at the police outpost at RG Kar Hospital and had access to all departments. He was arrested on the basis of CCTV footage that showed him entering the building where the doctor was found murdered.

He had confessed to abusing his mother, sister and wife on interrogation by the police.

Police said the accused's mother-in-law had previously filed a complaint against him at Kalighat Police Station for physically abusing his wife.

They also claimed that he was allegedly addicted to pornography and was also known as a womanizer.
