FM Nirmala Sitharaman visits Assam to inaugurate, inspect key development projects
Guwahati: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in Assam on Friday for a two-day official visit and was received at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma received her at the beginning of her two-day visit, which focuses on infrastructure and development initiatives in the state.

Her visit marks yet another milestone in Assam’s growth journey as we move ahead with transformative projects shaping our state’s future."
Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog also shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the Finance Minister was received at the airport in the presence of the Chief Minister as she arrived in Assam for a two-day visit.
According to the official itinerary, Sitharaman’s visit includes programmes aimed at supporting Assam’s industrial, infrastructural, and educational sectors.
She is scheduled to inspect the new semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, part of India’s plan to develop a semiconductor industry.
In Guwahati, she will inaugurate a water terminal and a riverfront garden aimed at enhancing urban development and river-based connectivity.
The Finance Minister, on November 8, will lay the foundation stone of Kanaklata Barua State University, a new institution planned to expand capacity for higher education and research in the region.
Officials have stated that the visit reflects the central government’s focus on economic growth and investment in Assam and the wider Northeast.
Sitharaman’s previous visit to the Northeast before November 2025 was to Meghalaya from July 10 to 13.
During that four-day trip, she inaugurated the Northeast Conclave at IIM Shillong, laid the foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs campus, interacted with self-help groups and entrepreneurs, visited Shillong Tech Park, and engaged with local communities in areas such as Sohra (Cherrapunji) and Laitkynsew village to review development projects.
There were no visits to Assam or other northeastern states between that trip and the current visit.
