DIBRUGARH: To address the growing concerns surrounding electric rickshaws in Dibrugarh district of Assam, the transport department has initiated measures to regulate their operations, including the introduction of a distinctive colouring scheme for proper identification.

The proliferation of e-rickshaws, particularly around Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), has led to disruptions in traffic flow.

Reports indicate that approximately 150 unauthorized electric rickshaws are operating in the vicinity, causing significant congestion.

Despite an initial allowance of only 23 electric rickshaws in the area, this number has more than tripled over the past two years.

Dibrugarh district transport officer Hirakjyoti Deka addressed the issue, stating, “We have received numerous complaints regarding the unauthorized operation of electric rickshaws on AMCH road. Following a recent meeting, it was decided to permit only 30 electric rickshaws to operate in the area. Drivers must undergo police verification and possess valid documents to ply their vehicles.”

In addition to limiting the number of authorized vehicles, the department has proposed color-coding for electric rickshaws to enhance their traceability.

Deka explained, “Color-coding will facilitate easy identification and streamline their operations.”

The unregulated movement of electric rickshaws has led to traffic congestion in various parts of Dibrugarh district in Assam, with drivers often disregarding traffic regulations.
