Guwahati: Charges will be framed on January 3 against seven individuals in connection with the death of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg, marking a significant step in the trial.

The accused, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Amritprabha Mahanta, and personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, will be presented virtually before the Sessions Judge’s court.

With the framing of charges, the trial will formally move into its next stage.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief over Zubeen Garg’s passing, calling it an irreplaceable loss for the state’s cultural and artistic heritage on New Year’s Day.

He assured that the government is committed to ensuring justice, announcing the appointment of a Special Public Prosecutor on January 12, supported by a team of three to four criminal advocates.

The Chief Minister also stated that the state government plans to approach the Gauhati High Court to set up a special court exclusively for the case, aiming to expedite proceedings and maintain transparency.

He commended the Special Investigation Team for filing the chargesheet promptly and reiterated that all actions would follow due legal process.

Sarma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to seeing the case through to its conclusion.

Court officials noted that further directions regarding the trial’s conduct and timeline are expected once the charges are formally framed.
