Guwahati: The Central government has announced a major infrastructure boost for the Northeastern region with the sanction of 78 roads, covering a length of 563.67 kilometres, and 14 bridges in Assam.

To strengthen rural connectivity and accelerate economic growth in the Northeastern region, the Ministry of Rural Development has sanctioned 78 roads measuring 563.67 kilometres and 14 bridges for Assam, the Ministry of Rural Development said in a statement.

The roads and bridges will be constructed with an estimated investment of Rs 378.68 crore under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) - III, it said.

This landmark initiative will improve access to essential services like healthcare, education and markets. It will also enhance connectivity in rural areas, bridging the gap between remote villages and urban centres, it added.

Moreover, the initiative will foster economic development, trade and commerce, create employment opportunities, and stimulate local economies in the region. It will align with the government’s vision of a prosperous Northeast and a developed India, it said.

The projects under PMGSY-III will have a transformative impact on the region, contributing to the growth and prosperity of the Northeastern states, it further said.
