BJP forms committee for candidates' selection for Assam Lok Sabha seats
GUWAHATI: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam has intensified its campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The Assam BJP has constituted a special committee to ‘meticulously’ select potential candidates for 12 Lok Sabha seats in the Northeast state.
Comprising 12 conveners and 12 co-convenors, the committee has been tasked with preparing a comprehensive list of potential candidates for each constituency.
The committee is slated to submit its finalized report by Tuesday (February 27).
Additionally, each convener and co-convener has been instructed to engage in discussions with senior BJP functionaries to ensure thorough deliberation in candidate selection.
Following the completion of this process, the report will be forwarded to Delhi.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita are scheduled to travel to Delhi on February 28 to present the report.
Notably, the BJP refrained from appointing conveners and co-convenors for two constituencies in Assam, namely Kokrajhar under the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR) and Barpeta.
It is anticipated that the BJP will leave the Kokrajhar constituency to its ally, the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL).
While speculation suggests that the Barpeta constituency may be allocated to the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
However, no official announcement has been made thus far.
Meanwhile, the AGP leadership has already informed the media of its intention to contest two Lok Sabha seats in Assam.
It appears increasingly likely that the BJP will contest 12 out of the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam, leaving Kokrajhar to the UPPL and Barpeta to the AGP.
