Guwahati: Assam's vibrant Bihu dance took centre stage on the world stage on April 13, 2023, securing a coveted spot in the Guinness World Records. Over 11,000 dancers and drummers converged at Guwahati's Sarusajai Stadium, marking a historic moment for the state's cultural heritage.
However, a Right to Information (RTI) application revealed the hefty price tag behind this achievement.
The Assam government paid a total of Rs 1, 66, 82,722 to the Guinness World Records authorities to secure the two titles: largest Bihu dance performance and largest performance by traditional folk musicians using instruments like dhol, pepa, gogona, and toka.
This cost breakdown further details that Rs 59 lakh was paid for the Bihu dance record and Rs 23.6 lakh for the musician record.
Interestingly, consultancy fees for both attempts amounted to a combined Rs 84.2 lakh, raising questions about the purpose and necessity of such high expenses.
However, this information remained undisclosed until the RTI reply, highlighting a potential lack of transparency in managing event funds.
In response to an RTI application filed by Satra Mukti Sangram Samitee president Devabrata Saikia, the Assam Electronics Corporation Limited (AMTRON) revealed this information.
This newfound information sparks a conversation about balancing cultural celebration with responsible financial management.
While securing a Guinness World Record for Bihu undoubtedly brought pride to Assam, a closer look reveals a significant expenditure on securing the titles and associated consultancy.
Apart from Rs 1, 66, 82,722 given to the authorities of Guinness World Records Assam government spent a total of Rs 53 crore from the state exchequer for the event.
Assam government provided Rs 25,000 each to the participating dancers and drummers.
