Guwahati: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold a 40-minute tribute to legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg before the opening match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 in Guwahati on September 30.

The tribute, in collaboration with the Assam Cricket Association, will take place at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, before India’s game against Sri Lanka.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the tribute, stating that it was a way to honor Zubeen Garg in light of the deep sorrow in Assam following his passing. “Given the grief in Assam, we felt it was important to pay tribute to Zubeen.

The 40-minute segment will be the cricket community's heartfelt tribute to him,” Saikia said.

Shreya Ghoshal, who was already scheduled to perform at the event, will be part of the tribute.

While other cultural performances were considered, Saikia explained that the full 40 minutes would be dedicated to honoring Zubeen Garg.

The tribute comes as Assam mourns the unexpected loss of Zubeen Garg, who passed away earlier this week after suffering a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island in Singapore.

His body was brought back to Guwahati on Sunday, where thousands of fans gathered to pay their respects.

The scheduled tribute at the World Cup is regarded as a fitting tribute to a cultural icon whose music has touched generations.
