Assam: Woman killed in wild elephant attack on Baksa–Barpeta border
Bajali: A 50-year-old woman, identified as Fajor Bhanu of Uttar Safoikamar in Assam's Barpeta district, was killed in a wild elephant attack along the Baksa–Barpeta border on Wednesday morning.
Earlier, on Tuesday, a cow was also killed by the same elephants, adding to growing concern in the area.
The incident occurred in Safoikamar, where two wild elephants that had strayed from Manas National Park have been causing panic across several areas for the past two days.
Locals said the elephants suddenly charged at the woman near her residence, killing her instantly.
Forest officials had been attempting since Tuesday to drive the animals back into the forest, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Wednesday’s attack occurred amid ongoing operations to remove the elephants from human settlements.
Following the woman’s death, angry villagers blocked the Barpeta Road–Manas connecting road, demanding stronger protection measures and immediate action from authorities.
The blockade was lifted after Barpeta Road Police arrived, brought the situation under control, and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
Forest personnel from Manas and nearby ranges continue efforts to push the elephants back into the protected forest area.
The elephants are still roaming near populated regions, keeping villagers on high alert.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution until the elephants are safely returned to the forest.
