Assam: Woman convicted under POCSO for sexually exploiting minor in Lakhimpur
North Lakhimpur: A court in Assam’s North Lakhimpur has convicted a woman under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO).
The convicted woman, identified as Samiran Begum of the Bogeenadi police station area in Lakhimpur district, was found guilty of seducing a minor girl and handing her over to a youth who had sexual contact with the victim in 2018.
A case was registered under Section 122/2018 at Bogeenadi police station against Samiran Begum and the youth.
While Samiran Begum was arrested, the youth fled.
The case was heard in the Special POCSO Court in North Lakhimpur under number 122/1.
A judge of the Special POCSO Court handed down the verdict on December 6, convicting Samiran Begum under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act.
She was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment under Section 366(A) of the IPC, a fine of Rs 5,000, and an additional four months’ imprisonment in default of payment.
The court also sentenced her to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment, a fine of Rs 6,000, and an additional five months’ imprisonment in default of payment under Sections 4/17 of the POCSO Act.
