Assam: Two arrested in Guwahati over Rs 8.59 crore fake GST invoice scam
Guwahati: Two people in Assam have been arrested by the CGST Guwahati Commissionerate for allegedly running a large-scale fake invoice racket, an official statement said on November 14.
According to the statement, the anti-evasion unit received intelligence about a group issuing fake invoices to multiple recipients without any actual supply of goods or services.
The scheme reportedly involved more than 50 suspicious GST registrations, which were allegedly used to claim fraudulent GST credits.
Acting on specific leads, authorities located two key members of the group.
During a search operation on Thursday, the accused reportedly admitted to obtaining GST registrations for non-existent companies and generating fake invoices to make money.
The two individuals were arrested on Friday and brought before the court, which sent them to judicial custody.
Preliminary investigations related to two companies have uncovered GST evasion of Rs 8.59 crore, with officials warning that further evasion involving several more crores may come to light as the probe continues.
