Assam: Two alleged vehicle thieves killed in police encounter near Sonapur
Guwahati: Two men allegedly involved in vehicle theft were killed in an exchange of fire with police at Markadala under Sonapur Police Station in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district early Thursday.
According to police sources, the incident occurred during an operation targeting an armed vehicle theft gang. The operation was launched after a Tata AC vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-KC-3128 was reportedly stolen from the Panbazar area of Guwahati.
Police said they tracked the suspected thieves to Markadala, where an exchange of gunfire subsequently took place. Two suspects sustained fatal injuries during the encounter and were identified as Saidul Alam Laskar and Babul Singh.
Following the exchange, police recovered two pistols, mobile phones and other items allegedly associated with vehicle theft from the site.
The bodies have been sent to Sonapur District Hospital for further procedures.
