Assam: Tinsukia celebrates Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary with tributes, cultural performances
Guwahati: Assam's Tinsukia district administration on Wednesday afternoon celebrated the birth centenary of legendary music maestro Bhupen Hazarika at the ITI playground in Borguri.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Rupesh Gowala said, “Remembering Bhupen da is not merely about honoring a musician; it’s about cherishing a philosophy that teaches us to see humanity in every tune and equality in every lyric.” His words set the tone for an afternoon steeped in reflection and artistic reverence.
The event resonated with the spirit of the “Xudhakantha,” celebrating his immortal contributions to Assam’s cultural and intellectual identity.
The commemorative function was graced by Rupesh Gowala, Minister for Labour and Employment, Government of Assam, as the Chief Guest. In attendance were several distinguished personalities, including Tinsukia MLA Sanjoy Kishan, Digboi MLA Suren Phukan, Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Paul, Padma Shri Dulal Manki, Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar, Chief Executive Member of Moran Autonomous Council Arunjyoti Moran, Chairman of Tinsukia Municipal Board Pulak Chetia, and Chairman of Tinsukia Development Authority Kajal Gohain.
Renowned author and journalist Amulya Khataniar delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the life and philosophy of Bhupen Hazarika, shedding light on how his art served as a bridge between tradition and modernity, and between the local and the global.
The event featured vibrant cultural performances inspired by Bhupen Hazarika’s compositions, echoing themes of brotherhood, social justice, and resilience.

The celebration concluded with floral tributes, creating an emotionally charged atmosphere reminiscent of the maestro’s timeless presence.

Organized under the initiative of the Tinsukia District Administration, the observance was part of statewide centenary celebrations, tagged under #BhupenDaAt100 and #BhupenHazarika100, honoring the singer whose voice continues to define the soul of Assam.
