Assam: Theft accused found dead in police custody in Tinsukia, locals allege foul play

Guwahati: A 22-year-old youth accused of goat theft reportedly died in police custody in Tinsukia, Assam on Sunday.

The youth according to police died by suicide inside the lock-up at Tongona Police Station in Kakopathar.

Sources said that the deceased has been identified as Dhanjit Moran, a resident of the Mazgaon area in Tongona.

He was detained by the police in a case related to alleged goat theft.

However, on Sunday it was reported that Moran committed suicide inside the lockup of the police station.

Following the incident locals protested against the police demanding an investigation as to how he could have killed himself inside police custody.

Some locals even claimed that that he was assaulted by the on-duty police.

An investigation has been initiated in connection with the incident.
