Assam: Tezpur University finance officer steps down amid ongoing campus agitation
Guwahati: The Finance Officer of Assam's Tezpur University, Braja Bandhu Mishra, formally stepped down from his post on Monday, December 1, citing the ongoing agitation at the university and the corruption allegations raised during the protest.
Mishra had not been present on campus since September 22, the second day of the agitation. In a written statement, he announced that he is ending all association with the university with immediate effect and referred to the “current atmosphere of unrest” along with allegations of financial irregularities linked to his tenure.
Students termed his resignation an important step in their movement. They said the development supports their claims of mismanagement, fund misuse, and administrative lapses allegedly involving senior officials, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, who has also remained unavailable on campus.
The protest, now in its third month, continues under a total shutdown of the campus, jointly observed by students, teachers, and non-teaching staff. The groups have stated that the shutdown will continue until the Union Ministry of Education orders an impartial inquiry into the corruption allegations and ensures proper administrative accountability.
Campus representatives added that Mishra’s resignation strengthens their position but does not mark the conclusion of the agitation. They maintained that the protest will continue until all concerns are addressed.
