Assam: Squirrel damage triggers coconut crisis ahead of Magh Bihu in Bajali
Bajali: As the Magh Bihu festival approaches, a sudden coconut crisis has hit several parts of Bajali district in Assam after giant squirrels damaged coconut crops in large numbers.
Areas such as Raipur, Pathsala, Titka, Saderi, Kenduguri and nearby villages have reported extensive losses, creating a shortage in local markets.
Due to the reduced supply, coconut prices have risen sharply, with rates ranging between Rs 250 and Rs 350 per pair, causing concern among consumers during the festive season when coconuts are in high demand.
Farmers said the damage has been severe and continuous. Ashok Roy, a resident of Raipur, said that within just 20 days, giant squirrels destroyed more than 100 pairs of coconuts from his plantation. “Our family depends entirely on farming. Even if we sell at Rs 250 per pair, the loss of 100 pairs means a direct loss of around Rs 25,000,” he said.
According to locals, the squirrels damage the coconuts both day and night, making it difficult to protect the crops. Despite repeated efforts, they claim there are no effective control measures in place.
The affected farmers have urged the agriculture and forest departments to take immediate steps to address the issue and provide relief, as the crisis has not only impacted their livelihoods but also disrupted the festive market ahead of Magh Bihu.
