Assam: Six arrested in human-trafficking racket in Tinsukia
Dibrugarh: Police have arrested six persons in connection with a human-trafficking racket in eastern Assam's Tinsukia district.
The accused have been identified as Dipak Phukan, Umakanta Chetri, Boby Deori Sona, Rohit Khadal, Peter Sabashi, and Ajit Munda.
According to sources, Dipak Phukan was nabbed by villagers of Duarmara Singpo village under Pengeri police station when he came to take away two minors from a nearby tea estate.
The villagers handed over Dipak Phukan to the Pengeri police. Following his arrest, police also arrested Umakanta Chetri, Boby Deori Sona, Rohit Khadal, Peter Sabashi, and Ajit Munda in connection with the case.
A case, number 28/2025, U/S 143(5)/3(5) BNS, has been registered at Pengeri police station. The main accused, Peter Sona, is absconding.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt to nab him.
Sources said the human traffickers have been targeting children of the tea gardens in upper Assam.
“Most human-trafficking cases have been reported from the Doomdooma area of Tinsukia. The crime has been thriving in tea garden areas, with traffickers targeting poor tea garden workers,” said a source.
