‘Assam to become major player in semiconductors manufacturing’
GUWAHATI: Renowned industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata expressed confidence that Tata's venture into semiconductor manufacturing in Assam will elevate the state onto the global stage.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended his gratitude to Tata Sons Emeritus Chairman Ratan Tata and N Chandrasekaran for establishing the semiconductor facility.
Taking to social media, Ratan Tata stated: “The investments being made in Assam will revolutionize the state's cancer treatment infrastructure. Today, in collaboration with the Assam state government, the Tata group aims to position Assam as a key player in advanced semiconductor technology.”
“This landmark initiative will firmly place Assam on the global radar. We are grateful to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his unwavering support and visionary leadership that has made this endeavour possible,” Tata added.
In response to Ratan Tata’s remark, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his gratitude, saying, “During my discussions with the Tata leadership, we agreed to establish a skill development centre within the premises of the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad.”
Sarma emphasized that this skill development centre will empower youth from the region by offering courses in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and electronics, thereby facilitating employment opportunities at the Jagiroad unit in Assam.
He highlighted that 1500 youths from Assam, primarily women, are already undergoing training at Tata facilities in and around Bangalore, and positioning them for leadership roles once the semiconductor facility commences operations in 2025.
The Assam chief minister further stated: “We anticipate the first chips to be produced by 2025.”
Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) is spearheading the establishment of the semiconductor unit in Assam.
With a capacity to produce 48 million chips per day, this state-of-the-art facility represents an investment of Rs 27,000 crore.
