Dibrugarh: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex at Khanikar in Dibrugarh, which is set to become Assam's largest multi-sports stadium upon completion.
During the visit, Sonowal inspected various infrastructure facilities and reviewed ongoing development works at the project site.
Built on 104 bighas of land, the sports complex is being developed in phases. Phase-I, constructed at a cost of Rs 233 crore, was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 30, 2026, and currently has a seating capacity of around 5,000 spectators.
Phase-II of the project, sanctioned at Rs 209 crore, will expand the stadium's seating capacity to 35,000, making it the largest multi-sports venue in the state.
The Phase-I facilities include an indoor stadium, swimming pool complex, football ground, synthetic athletic track, lawn tennis, volleyball and badminton courts, athlete hostels, a VIP block and other supporting infrastructure.
Speaking during the review, Sonowal said the sports complex would contribute to the development of sports infrastructure in Dibrugarh and Upper Assam and provide opportunities for young athletes in the region.
