Guwahati: The Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) successfully rescued an 18-month-old rhino calf separated from its mother during the deluge in Kaziranga, Assam.

The calf found temporary refuge in Baghmari before being transferred to the CWRC for specialized care.

The current floods have been particularly harsh on Kaziranga National Park.

Park officials report 31 animal deaths due to drowning, with the toll including 23 hog deer.

However, a dedicated rescue operation has saved 82 animals, including the rhino calf, two otters, two sambar deer, a scops owl, an Indian hare, and a jungle cat.

The impact of the floods extends far beyond the wildlife park.

Across Assam, 46 lives have been lost and over 10.6 lakh people in 29 districts suffering due to the second wave of flooding.
