Assam: Protest erupts in Karimganj against attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh
Karimganj: A massive protest took place in Karimganj district of Assam on Monday (August 12) evening as hundreds of people gathered to voice their concern and anger over the recent targeted attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
The protest rally saw participation from people across the district, united in their demand for stronger actions to protect Hindus and other minorities in the neighboring country.
The protest was fueled by reports of increasing incidents of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, including the vandalism of temples and the looting of homes.
The demonstrators marched through the streets of Karimganj in Assam carrying banners and chanting slogans that condemned the attacks and called for immediate intervention by the Indian government.
Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, the MLA representing Karimganj constituency in Assam while speaking to the media, expressing solidarity with the affected communities in Bangladesh.
"The people of Karimganj have come out today against the situation in Bangladesh," he said.
"Temples are being vandalized, and houses are being looted there. This is a matter of grave concern, not just for the Hindu community, but for anyone who believes in justice and human rights."
Purkayastha praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the steps taken so far by the Indian government on the matter but urged him to do more.
"PM Modi has been taking bold steps. We request him to take more bold steps and protect the Hindus and minorities of Bangladesh. It is time for stronger diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety and security of these vulnerable communities."
The situation in Bangladesh has drawn widespread attention and condemnation from human rights organizations worldwide, who have called on the Bangladeshi government to take immediate action to protect its minority communities.
