Guwahati: Belsor Police have finally arrested the prime accused in the Mohkhuli robbery-murder case in Assam's Nalbari, bringing an end to a nearly three-month manhunt.

The arrested man, Kalpajyoti Deka, a resident of Mohkhuli, had allegedly masterminded the brutal crime and remained in hiding since the night of the incident.

Police teams, working across districts and following multiple leads, tracked him down after months of sustained investigation. Officials confirmed that Deka had been absconding since August 29, when the murder took place.

The victim’s son expressed relief after hearing about the arrest.

He expressed his gratitude to the police for their relentless efforts, saying he stayed involved throughout the investigation. “Now that the main culprit is behind bars and all others are in custody, my father’s soul can rest in peace,” he added.

In September, the police had already nabbed four people linked to the crime, including a woman.

DIG Indrani Baruah said that the police conducted the investigation scientifically, using the CID, fingerprint experts, a dog squad, and human intelligence.

Those arrested earlier were Bhaskarjyoti Deka, Mrinmoy Bezbaruah, Rupam Bezbaruah (who later surrendered), and Puja Rajbongshi.Baruah confirmed that all four directly involved in the robbery and murder.

Police also detained a young woman from Zoo Road in Guwahati after they traced to her the stolen mobile phone belonging to the victim’s wife, Meera Barman. The phone had been gifted to her by one of the accused.

“She initially refused to cooperate, but technical analysis helped us recover the phone and confirm her role,” Baruah added.

The horrific crime occurred on August 29, when three masked dacoits broke into the home of retired government employee Promod Barman in Mohkhuli under Belsor Police Station. The gang tied up Barman and his wife, looted valuables for nearly 30 minutes, and then murdered him in front of her before escaping.

With the arrest of Kalpajyoti Deka, police now have every accused person in custody, marking a major breakthrough in the high-profile case.
