Assam Police rescue four youths, arrest drug peddler in Guwahati
Guwahati: To curb Assam's growing drug crisis problem, an East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha Police Station carried out a targeted search operation in the Basistha Natun Bazar area on Wednesday, rescuing four youths found consuming narcotic substances.
“Every rescue is an opportunity to help someone start over,” said a senior EGPD officer involved in the operation.
Acting on reliable information, the team moved quickly, preventing further harm to the individuals and arranging their immediate transfer to a rehabilitation centre for medical care and psychological counselling.
According to officials, the rescued youths have been admitted to a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, where they will receive treatment and take part in social reintegration programs.
Police sources said the operation focused on both law enforcement and compassion, aiming to give those caught in addiction a second chance to rebuild their lives.
In a follow-up action, the same team raided the Natun Bazar Shiv Nagar area, arresting a habitual drug peddler identified as Dipen Barman, also known as Kosu, aged 30.
Police recovered 39.55 grams of heroin hidden in five tobacco boxes, along with 30 empty plastic vials believed to have been used to package the drugs.
The accused has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been started under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The operation is part of Assam Police’s ongoing #WarOnDrugs campaign, launched under the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has emphasized a dual approach of strict law enforcement and compassionate rehabilitation.
DGP Assam Police reaffirmed that the department’s focus remains firm: breaking the drug supply chain while ensuring that people struggling with addiction get the help they need.
