Assam: Over 1.6 lakh remain flood-hit across 14 districts as death toll reaches 95
Guwahati: Flood conditions continued to affect several parts of Assam on Wednesday (August 5), with over 1.6 lakh people still reeling under the impact across 14 districts, although the overall situation improved in some areas as water levels gradually receded. The cumulative flood death toll in the state this year has climbed to 95, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The ASDMA's daily flood report said 160,653 people living in 563 villages under 38 revenue circles remain affected by the current spell of flooding. The affected districts include Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Kamrup (Metro), Jorhat, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Darrang, Karbi Anglong and Udalguri.
According to the Central Water Commission's 8 am flood bulletin, the Dhansiri (South) River at Numaligarh was the only river flowing above the danger level, while no river was reported to be above its highest flood level.
Among the affected districts, Sivasagar remained the worst hit with 57,243 people impacted, followed by Golaghat (33,871), Jorhat (24,923), Charaideo (22,122), Lakhimpur (5,787), Dhemaji (4,533), Biswanath (3,747), Darrang (3,613) and Nagaon (2,764). Floodwaters continued to inundate 16,951.76 hectares of agricultural land across the state.
Relief and rescue efforts remained underway in the affected districts. A total of 104 relief camps and relief distribution centres were operational, providing shelter to 12,356 people, while 32,048 others received relief assistance outside the camps.
Rescue teams deployed 76 boats and evacuated 491 people along with 20 animals from flooded areas. Authorities also continued distributing essential relief materials, including rice, pulses, edible oil and cattle feed, to affected families.
The floods have also damaged key public infrastructure. Official records show damage to 22 roads, two bridges, several embankments, and 76 houses that were either completely or severely damaged. An additional 266 houses sustained partial damage.
The ASDMA report further stated that one person remains missing, while the floods have affected 35,025 livestock across the state.
Although the flood situation has shown signs of improvement in several locations, intermittent rainfall in parts of Upper Assam has kept authorities on alert. Restoration of damaged infrastructure and relief operations are continuing in the affected districts.
