GUWAHATI: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Assam for a two-day visit, student bodies and political parties intensified their protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The United Opposition Forum, Assam (UOFA), comprising 16 parties, staged a sit-in demonstration at Kaliabor Tiniali, about 50km from Kohora, where the PM stayed overnight.

Later in the evening, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 30 other organizations held a memorial, lighting lamps in honor of five individuals who lost their lives during the anti-CAA movement in 2019.

Modi arrived in the state on Friday afternoon and stayed at the Assam police guest house near Central Kohora Range in Kaziranga National Park.

Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi stated that if the opposition bloc INDIA is voted to power in the upcoming general elections, their first cabinet meeting would repeal the contentious law.

He also mentioned his decision not to receive the PM at Panbari helipad, citing opposition to welcoming someone perceived as "working against the interests of the Assamese community."
