Guwahati: Security forces have arrested two linkmen of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) from Assam's Tinsukia district and recovered Rs 12 lakh cash from their possession.

Based on specific information about the presence of over ground workers (OGWs) of extremist outfits, the Indian Army and Assam Police on Monday launched a joint operation at Tikok village in Tinsukia district's Margherita, Kohima-based Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO), Lt Col Amit Shukla, said in a statement on Wednesday.

After an intensive search operation, the team apprehended an active OGW of NSCN (K) and recovered Rs 12 lakh cash besides other incriminating documents from a neighbouring house, it said.

The police soon apprehended a woman from the house for further questioning. The cash recovered is assessed to be extortion money collected by various insurgent groups active in upper Assam, it added.

Relentless operations by the security forces are aimed to prevent extortions and dismantle the financial networks that sustain insurgent groups in upper Assam, thereby restoring peace and stability in the region, it further said.
