Udalguri: Tensions flared in Assam's Udalguri district on Saturday night as angry villagers staged a protest demanding the arrest of a man accused of killing a 22-year-old youth.

The body of Jiten Boro was placed on the Mangaldoi-Bhutiachang road in Tangla to highlight the family's and community's outrage over the lack of action by police.

According to reports, Boro was critically injured on August 9 during a dispute at a gambling den in 1 No. Alikash village.

A man identified as Utpal Deka allegedly struck him on the head with a bamboo pole. Despite initial signs of recovery, Boro's condition deteriorated, and he succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The subsequent protest caused significant traffic disruptions on the busy road. Police, including Tangla Police Station Officer-in-Charge Biswajit Medhi and Bhergaon Sub-Divisional Police Officer Durga Kingkar Sarma, along with local administration officials, were deployed to control the situation.

Following assurances from authorities that Deka would be arrested, the protesters agreed to remove Boro's body and allow the funeral to proceed.

Local organizations and the village management committee also played a crucial role in de-escalating the situation.
