Guwahati: Assam and Mizoram have decided to strengthen tourism ties through joint initiatives aimed at attracting more visitors to destinations across the Northeast.

The understanding was reached during talks between Assam Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog and Mizoram Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar at Neog's official residence in Guwahati on Saturday, officials said.

During the discussions, Hmar said tourism in Mizoram has gained momentum since the state was connected to the railway network in September last year.

He noted that Assam contributes the highest number of visitors to Mizoram, making closer collaboration between the two states important for sustaining this growth.

Referring to the steady flow of travellers from Assam, Hmar said both governments should strengthen tourism ties through joint promotional efforts.

He also expressed hope that the partnership between the neighbouring states would continue to grow in the coming years.

Neog said Assam looked forward to expanding tourism cooperation with Mizoram, adding that joint initiatives would benefit both states by increasing visitor footfall.

The two ministers agreed to launch joint tourism programmes and promotional campaigns to encourage travel between Assam and Mizoram.

An official statement said they also stressed that stronger cooperation among all northeastern states would help promote the region more effectively as a tourism destination across the country.
