Assam: Locals foil fake currency racket in Baihata Chariali
Guwahati: A group of locals in Baihata Chariali of Kamrup, Assam nabbed two individuals on allegations of being involved in a fake currency racket.
Residents of Malibari village in Assam's Baihata Chariali apprehended two youths attempting to circulate counterfeit currency on Friday night.
Champak Kalita and Abhinash Kalita were caught in possession of fake notes totalling approximately Rs 40,000, comprising counterfeit Rs 500 denominations.
A sharp-eyed local shopkeeper raised suspicions when the duo repeatedly visited his establishment to exchange the fake currency.
With the assistance of vigilant locals, the shopkeeper detained the accused and handed them over to the Baihata Chariali police.
The police have initiated an investigation into the source of the counterfeit currency and are currently interrogating the suspects.
