Assam: Kaziranga elephant calf named 'Mayabini' in tribute to Zubeen Garg

Guwahati: Assam's Kaziranga welcomed a newborn calf, affectionately named Mayabini, on Saturday, Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary announced.

The song titled “Mayabini Ratir Bukut” (In the Heart of the Enchanting Night) is from the 2001 film “Daag”, directed by Munin Barua. Zubeen Garg, the heartthrob of the new generation, both wrote and composed the song, and also lent his voice to it.

In a heartwarming development coinciding with World Animal Day, Kuwari, a well-known elephant at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR), gave birth to a healthy female calf, bringing widespread joy and admiration across Assam.

Announcing the news on social media Saturday evening, Assam Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary shared that the newborn elephant had been affectionately named Mayabini—a name that deeply resonates with the people of Assam.

The naming carries special emotional significance. Mayabini is also the title of one of the most beloved songs by the late Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg, whose untimely death continues to stir profound emotion throughout the state.

Earlier, Patowary posted the announcement on his official X handle, stating:

“Heartening news on #WorldAnimalDay — Kuwari, the elephant of Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve, has given birth to a healthy female calf! With immense affection and public goodwill, we’ve named her ‘MAYABINI’ — a symbol of new life, hope, and harmony in the wild.”

The announcement struck a sentimental chord with Zubeen Garg’s fans and wildlife enthusiasts alike, many of whom see the name Mayabini as a symbolic tribute to the late singer’s enduring influence on Assam’s cultural and emotional landscape.

Wildlife officials at Kaziranga confirmed that both the mother and calf are in good health and are under the care of veterinarians. “The birth of the calf signals a positive trend for the park’s elephant population and reflects the success of our conservation efforts,” said a senior forest official.

The global community acclaims Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for its rich biodiversity and its successful conservation of endangered species, including the one-horned rhinoceros and Asian elephants.

As Assam continues to mourn the loss of Zubeen Garg, the naming of Mayabini unites nature, emotion, and art—reminding everyone of the deep bond between Assam’s wildlife and its soulful cultural heritage.

Zubeen Garg, the legendary singer, died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in Singapore. The CID is currently investigating the case.
