Assam govt meets teachers' association, pledges to fill vacancies and regularise headmasters
Guwahati: The Assam government held a meeting at Janata Bhawan here on Friday with representatives of the Assam High School Teachers’ Association, focusing on teacher recruitment, regularisation of school heads, and provincialisation of schools.
“The government is committed to speeding up pending teacher appointments to maintain teaching standards and reduce classroom pressure,” a senior official who attended the meeting said.
According to Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, who shared the update on X, the meeting primarily reviewed three issues:
- Filling all vacant posts in provincialised schools that have remained unoccupied since 2013,
- Regularising in-charge headmasters as full-time Head Teachers, and
- Streamlining and expanding the provincialisation process for eligible high schools across Assam.
The discussion was convened to strengthen the overall framework of secondary education in the state and ensure better service conditions for teachers.
Officials added that regularising in-charge headmasters would help bring stability to school management. “When a school has a permanent head, long-term academic planning becomes far more effective,” one official noted.
Representatives of the teachers’ association described the meeting as constructive and reassuring.
One participant said, “We came with long-pending demands, and we are hopeful that the government will translate these assurances into timely action.”
The Education Minister reaffirmed the government’s stand, stating that improving high school education remains a priority. He wrote that the Assam government is “continuously working to enhance educational quality and safeguard the welfare of teachers, and this commitment will continue in the future as well.”
Friday’s meeting is expected to pave the way for faster reforms in staffing, administration, and institutional support within Assam’s high school system.
