Assam: Govt compensates families for demolished homes in Batadrava

Guwahati: The Assam government has provided compensation to six families whose homes were demolished in Batadrava, Nagaon district, following a 2022 arson attack on the local police station.

According to an affidavit submitted to the Gauhati High Court, the government provided Rs 12 lakh each to two families whose houses were made of reinforced concrete (RCC).

Four families residing in non-concrete structures received Rs 2.5 lakh each.

However, the High Court expressed concerns about the lack of action taken against police officers potentially responsible for the demolitions. The court had previously directed the state government to hold these officials accountable.

While investigations are ongoing, no punitive measures have been implemented so far.

The High Court has now ordered the state government to submit a plan outlining the intended disciplinary actions against the involved officials within the next three weeks.

This development follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) numbered 8285/2022, which the Gauhati High Court took up suo moto after the Batadrava incident.
