Guwahati: An uncontrolled gas leak at an ONGC pipeline in Assam's Charaideo district has authorities on high alert as natural gas continues to escape despite containment efforts.

The leak, reported at the Laiphaleng LP-1 manifold in Bakata Patsaku Laiphaleng, is thought to have been caused by excessive pressure in the gas transport system.

ONGC teams reached the site following the incident, but attempts to stop the leak had not succeeded by late Saturday.

Officials from the local administration and ONGC have set up monitoring measures around the affected area, as the uncontrolled gas release poses a risk of a serious accident.

Experts warned that the flammable nature of natural gas could lead to an explosion if it comes into contact with any ignition source.

Emergency response teams are maintaining heightened vigilance while engineers work to isolate the damaged pipeline section and stop the gas flow from the manifold.

ONGC has not disclosed the exact cause of the excessive pressure that caused the leak or indicated when normal operations may resume.
