Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam remained unchanged on Tuesday, June 4, with the deluge claiming six more lives over the past 24 hours, and more than 4.23 lakh people across nine districts reeling under waters.

While five deaths were reported from Barak Valley’s Cachar district, a woman was swept away by the surging flood waters in Nagaon district’s Raha area. With this, the death toll in the current wave of floods has reached 24, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its bulletin.

Altogether 4,23,323 people in Cachar, Nagaon, Karimganj, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi and West Karbi Anglong districts still remain affected due to the floods. Nagaon remained the worst-hit district for the fourth consecutive day with 2,13,482 people being affected, followed by Cachar (1,19,090) and Hojai (60,451), it said.

As many as 32,872 displaced people across six districts are still taking shelter in 167 relief camps. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES) are carrying out rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.

Rivers Kopili and Kushiyara were flowing over the danger level mark, the ASDMA statement further said.
