Guwahati: An elephant that was separated from its herd was found dead in Behali of Biswanath, Assam on Saturday morning.

The elephant was found dead near the Goroimari area of Behali by locals and forest officials.

However, the cause of death is not yet known.

Police officials said that they were informed by the forest department regarding the death of the elephant at around 7 am.

The exact cause behind the death is not yet.

A local speaking on the issue told the media that the elephant may have died due to an injury.

On the other hand, a police source said that they along with the forest department are looking into all angles of the incident.

The locals claimed that the elephant was part of a herd that usually visits the village and destroys paddy fields.

It used to be last in the herd and had a visible injury on the limbs.

The locals alleged that the forest department knew about this but still remained to not provide the jumbo with the necessary medical attention.

They accused the forest department of being liable for the death.

The forest department so far has not made any statement regarding the actual cause of death and is awaiting postmortem reports.
