Assam govt postpones school exams after Zubeen Garg's death

Guwahati : Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Friday evening instructed to postpone the half-yearly examinations of schools slated for Saturday following the death of singer Zubeen Garg.

"In view of the untimely death of Late Zubeen Garg, all Inspectors of Schools are instructed to postpone the half-yearly examination scheduled tomorrow until the cremation of the mortal remains of the legendary artist," Minister Ranoj Pegu posted on X on Friday evening.

In a shocking tragedy that has gripped Assam, legendary singer Zubeen Garg, 52, passed away on Friday in Singapore prompting the Assam government to postpone school examinations as a mark of respect.

The beloved artiste, known for timeless hits like "Ya Ali" and his soul-stirring Assamese folk renditions, went to Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival when the mishap occurred. Rescued from the sea by Singapore police, he was rushed to Singapore General Hospital but succumbed around 2:40 p.m. local time despite intensive care.

Born in Tura, Meghalaya, in 1972 and brought up in Assam's Jorhat , Garg's career spanned over three decades, blending Assamese, Hindi, and Bengali melodies while singing in 40 languages. He leaves behind wife Garima Saikia Garg and son Gautam, leaving fans worldwide in disbelief.

The postponement underscores the profound impact Garg had on Assam's youth and education sector, where his songs often inspired school events and cultural programs.
