Guwahati: With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are likely to visit the state later this month.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a felicitation programme at Changsari in North Guwahati, Sarma said invitations have been extended to the Prime Minister for January 17 and 18, and to the Union Home Minister for January 29.

“We have invited the Prime Minister on January 17 and 18 and the Union Home Minister on January 29. The detailed programme will be shared once the itineraries are finalised,” the Chief Minister said.

If Modi’s visit takes place, it will be his 37th trip to Assam in the last 11 years, Sarma added.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a large-scale cultural event, with a mass Bagurumba dance performance planned at the Sarusajai Sports Complex on January 17. About 10,000 dancers are expected to participate.

On January 2, Sarma, along with Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Borah, visited the Sarusajai complex to review arrangements and assess logistical preparedness. The Chief Minister also chaired a review meeting with officials, stressing the need for precision, discipline and coordinated execution.

Borah said Sarusajai will host multiple rehearsal sessions from January 12 to 15, with artistes from across Assam taking part.

“These rehearsals are essential so that participants understand the formations, rhythm and process, ensuring a flawless and visually impressive performance,” Borah said, describing the event as a proud moment and a major showcase of Assam’s cultural heritage.

Union Home Minister Shah last visited Assam on December 29, when he inaugurated several infrastructure and cultural projects, including the Jyoti–Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir, a new Police Commissionerate building and an integrated command and control centre aimed at enhancing urban security.
