Assam will build and name a one-km road after Everest summiteer Rupamoni Gorh to honour her historic achievement and inspire youth.

Guwahati: The Assam government has announced that it will construct a one-kilometre road leading to the residence of Rupamoni Gorh, the first woman from the state to scale Mount Everest, and name it in her honour.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the decision was taken to recognise Gorh's historic achievement and acknowledge her courage, determination and contribution to inspiring young people, especially women, across Assam.

Rupamoni Gorh created history on May 21, 2026, by becoming the first woman from Assam to summit Mount Everest. She achieved the feat as a member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) All-Women's Everest Expedition.

The proposed road, to be constructed in Lakhimpur district, will serve as a permanent tribute to her accomplishment and mark a milestone that has brought pride to the state.

According to the state government, the initiative reflects its commitment to recognising individuals whose achievements have earned national and international recognition for Assam while motivating the younger generation to pursue ambitious goals.

The government said Gorh's journey from Assam to the summit of the world's highest peak is an example of how determination, discipline and perseverance can help overcome challenges and achieve extraordinary success.

Officials said naming the road after Gorh would also stand as a symbol of women's empowerment and encourage future generations to dream big and excel in different fields.

The government added that honouring achievers like Rupamoni Gorh is part of its broader effort to celebrate excellence and inspire youth by recognising outstanding contributions made by people from Assam in sports, adventure, culture and other fields.
