GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made bold predictions regarding the fate of the Congress party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, foreseeing a significant decline in its electoral performance.

Addressing a summit, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that the Congress party's stronghold would weaken considerably, estimating that they would not secure more than 30 to 40 seats in the upcoming polls.

The Assam chief minister further emphasized that the Congress party's influence has already diminished to that of a regional entity.

Expressing his personal desire to witness a drastic reduction in the Congress' parliamentary presence, CM Sarma humorously juxtaposed it with the number of players in the Indian cricket team, stating, “My wish is that they (Congress) should reduce to 11 (the number of players in the Indian Cricket team) but it would not happen.”

Sarma's remarks extended beyond mere electoral predictions, delving into the broader landscape of Indian politics.

He anticipated a shift away from dynastic politics, envisioning the emergence of a new era characterized by development-oriented governance.

According to the Assam CM, the post-election period will mark the decline of Congress dominance and the culmination of family-centric politics.

Earlier, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed strong confidence in the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma predicted a win in 22 out of the 25 seats in the Northeast region.

CM Sarma hinted at the potential for this number to rise to 23, characterizing the forthcoming elections as straightforward with no expected complications.

During his media interaction on Thursday (March 07), the Assam chief minister asserted, “The NDA is poised to secure 22 out of 25 seats from the Northeast.”

He added: “This is definitive. It may even rise to 23. It will be a very straightforward election with no complexities.”
