Assam CM continues communal narrative post-elections, says high minority voter turnout a concern
GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has decided to continue with his highly communal narratives even after conclusion of Lok Sabha elections.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed concerns over the high voter turnout in the minority-dominated Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency in the state.
CM Sarma described the high voter turnout in minority-dominated areas of Assam as ‘alarming’ and hinted at potential “communal influences from the Muslim community”.
Speaking to the media, the Assam CM highlighted the massive victory margin of Congress leader Rakibul Hussain, who won by over 10 lakh votes from Dhubri constituency.
He claimed that this outcome reflects “demographic changes” that could threaten the existence of indigenous communities in middle and lower Assam.
“The victory of Congress leader Rakibul Hussain by a margin of over 10 lakh votes raises concerns about the demographic shifts in Assam,” said CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sarma added: “This poses a potential threat to the future of the indigenous communities in Assam.”
The Assam chief minister also claimed that the win of the Congress party in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency was a result of “demographic change” in the state.
In Hindu-dominated assembly segments, the BJP led, but in Muslim-majority areas such as Lahorighat, Dhing, Rupohi and Samaguri, around 2.5 lakh voters helped Congress secure the seat, Assam CM Himanta Biswa sarma said.
“In Guwahati, Congress received around 4 lakh votes. Some might think this support came from the city’s residents, but in reality, voters from Muslim-majority areas like Goroimari and Tupamari supported Congress,” he added.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma further claimed that Hindu voters do not vote communally, as their votes are divided among the BJP, Congress and AGP.
In contrast, he noted, even Badruddin Ajmal, a prominent minority leader, could not achieve a 10 lakh vote margin, which he finds concerning.

During the first five phases of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, Dhubri emerged with the highest voter turnout in Assam at 92.08%.
Barpeta and Nagaon also saw high voter participation, with turnouts of 85.24% and 84.97%, respectively.
Lok Sabha elections in Assam were conducted in three phases, with the first phase on April 19 witnessing a turnout of 78.25%, the second phase on April 26 seeing 77.35%, and the third phase on May 7 reaching 81.71%.
Dhubri and Barpeta recorded their high turnout on May 07 during the third phase, while Nagaon had a strong showing on April 26 in the second phase.
In Dhubri, approximately 24.5 lakh out of 26 lakh eligible voters participated in the electoral process.
